Meeting Pregnancy's Unique Sleep Needs

During pregnancy, a woman’s body is profoundly transformed—physically, hormonally, and emotionally. It’s only logical that these radical changes would affect her sleep patterns, habits, and quality.  Ask any mom. Sleep disturbances start before the baby is born! There are numerous discomforts that can interrupt or impair a pregnant woman's sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation’s 1998 Women and Sleep poll, “78 percent of women report more disturbed sleep during pregnancy than at other times.”  The sleep disorders women often develop during pregnancy include Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD or heartburn), sleep apnea, Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), insomnia, and chronic lower back pain. Add to that other common complaints such as nausea, leg cramps, achey joints, and night sweats. Sleep issues while pregnant are further complicated by the fact that medications must be avoided to protect the baby's development.

As your belly grows, a variety of activities become more difficult, and sleep is no exception. If you’re currently pregnant or have ever been pregnant, you know that settling into a comfortable sleeping position can be a challenge. Most women become pretty resourceful in their efforts to get comfortable. Coping strategies abound, ranging from frequent position changes to incorporating extra pillows for support at the knees, hips, and back.

The European Sleep Works Solution

Many pregnant women find their pre-pregnancy sleeping environment lacks the support they now need. A mattress that was just right may now feel too firm. A tolerable degree of mattress wear may now be simply too saggy. A pillow may need to be plumper. The bedding may need to be lighter or more breathable. And because pregnant women are for the most part limited to side sleeping, extra pillows may be needed to create better contour and support.

Pregnant women may find they need:

  1. A comfortable way to facilitate side sleeping
  2. Extra support at the belly, hips, knees, and shoulders
  3. Incline for elevated sleeping to combat breathing difficulties or heartburn
  4. Appropriate room temperature and breathable bedding
  5. Proper head and neck support
  6. Additional softness from their mattress surface

Mattress and Slat System: European Sleep Works has developed a number of products that help expectant mothers alleviate nighttime discomfort and get the extra support their bodies need. All of our mattresses are designed to facilitate side sleeping. They are engineered to flex where the body needs give—at the shoulders and hips—yet remain stable where we need lift and support—at the waist and knees. Combine our mattress with our flexible slat system and you'll acheive even greater depth of contour and contact pressure reduction.

Luxury Pillow Top: For women that want to bolster the softness of their mattress surface, our pillow top creates gentle, plush, soft support. The pillow top can help "fill in the gaps" and provide relief to achey hips and shoulders.

Sleep Wedge: If heartburn or breathing is a problem, our sleep wedge can help by providing comfortable, gentle incline to the torso. The wedge is made of stretchy all-natural latex foam.

Body and Pregnancy Pillows: With the necessity to side sleep and the increased weight at the abdomen, most women will see huge improvement in sleep comfort by adding a body pillow. We offer a breathable wool-filled body pillow to help keep your body stable and comfortably rotated back. We also offer pregnant women our belly wedge pillow. This is a small wedge-shaped latex pillow that can be placed under the belly to provide extra lift and support right where you need it.

Breathable Bedding: We offer everything you need atop your mattress: mattress pad, sheet sets, blankets, duvets, and pillows. And all of them are made from breathable, natural materials such as organic cotton, wool, camel hair, and latex. Breathable linens will help you maintain a comfortable body temperature throughout the night.

Oxygen Pillow: Our patented design provides proper head and neck elevation for better breathing in a range of heights and firmness options. A great asset to the side-sleeper, the Oxygen Pillow can also provide relief to your shoulder and keep the chest in a more open, relaxed position.

Peace of Mind: All of our products are non-toxic, natural fiber, natural latex, and eco-certified. We don't use chemical fire retardants. So you and your expanding family can rest assured knowing you're sleeping in a healthy bedroom environment.
