It can be hard to sleep peacefully when your mattress behaves like a ship on rough seas anytime you shift position. Motion transfer—the technical term for mattress instability—is one of the most common problems affecting mattress comfort. It’s that awful bouncing, shaking, and rolling-together you experience if someone gets in or out of bed or rolls over. A mattress with motion transfer problems not only causes sleep disturbances, it lacks sufficient elasticity, density, and strength to provide real contour or support.
The surface of a mattress needs elasticity to be responsive under compression and to allow the body’s curves to be fully supported. Likewise, the cushioning and coils inside the mattress also need to function independently in order to absorb rather than transfer movement from side-to-side.
Unfortunately, most conventional mattresses are covered in a tightly woven fabric fixed to a reinforced edge. Inside, they contain an interconnected, bound coil construction and non-elastic polyurethane cushioning. This design reduces flex, increases contact pressure, encourages “soft spots” to develop in the middle, and causes surface movement to travel across the mattress. It is simply unable to isolate motion at the point of contact or provide dynamic support.
The European Sleep Works Solution
Building a mattress that eliminates motion transfer goes hand-in-hand with creating true ergonomic support. It starts with our cover. We use a stretchy, organic knit-cotton fabric that reduces surface tension and provides give. The internal components are assembled as free-floating, non-bound layers for greater nuance and responsiveness. We have high coil counts and every coil works independently, creating maximum flexibility and superior contour while dramatically reducing motion transfer. For cushioning, we use durable, clean, all-natural latex, known for its unique elasticity.
Our design allows the mattress to give when and where you need give while remaining still and stable across the rest of the mattress surface. Weight applied to one area doesn’t tug across the mattress surface. It “fits” you—and your partner—separately and specifically. The result is a quiet yet dynamic mattress that performs consistently from corner to corner and edge to edge.
